Guimarães was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and began his career with Audax. In 2017, he joined Athletico Paranaense, where he won the Copa do Brasil in 2019. He moved to Lyon in January 2020, and in January 2022 he joined Newcastle United for a club record fee of £40 million.
